Young people are being offered free football sessions as part of an ambitious project to promote self-development and prevent crime and anti-social behaviour.
Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews has contributed £4,279 towards the Premier League Kicks programme, which is being delivered by Leicester City in the Community on behalf of Hinckley and Bosworth Community Safety Partnership.
The sessions are run at Green Towers Youth Club in Hinckley for young people aged between 11 and 16 in term-time only. Project leaders are working in partnership with the local beat team to provide a consistent place for young people to meet and take part in safe, physical activities after school in their community.
This week, coaching staff and youngsters received a special visit from Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Rani Mahal.
After the event, Rani said: "This scheme is not only nurturing the talents and self-esteem of young people within this community it is also helping to build bridges between the police and the younger generation and develop relationships based on trust and respect.
"I was impressed by the motivation and willingness to learn from the young people taking part. Many have had the opportunity to compete in tournaments through this scheme, taking their commitment and dedication to new levels.
"These sessions have been warmly welcomed by the local community and parents. They support the Commissioner's ongoing crime prevention strategy and increase opportunities for young people to excel. It is clear both the coaches and the young people themselves find these sessions extremely valuable. I am sure the good work will continue."
Councillor Michael Mullaney, Executive Member for Community Safety at the Borough Council, said: "The programme provides positive opportunities for young people to get involved in sport.
"More than 80 young people took part during 2022/23, with a at least 30 youngsters enjoying the sessions each week. The partnership has proven to be a fantastic initiative for young people to meet others in a safe and welcoming environment, build relationships with the police and have fun at the same time by playing football."
