Most of us use our cars on a regular basis, but it’s also good to remember that the bus can also be a handy option.
This is why, I am so pleased to read that the Conservative Government will ensure fares remain at £2 a journey for most routes across England.
Buses are the most popular form of public transport and help people across the country get to work, attend medical appointments, and see loved ones.
Travelling by bus is great and is generally a cheaper option. It saves money on parking and fuel and is always better for our environment, reducing our carbon footprint and improving local air quality.
The £2 bus fare was introduced at the start of 2023 to support all of us in managing the increasing cost of living.
And while it was due to increase this October, because of the Government’s recent decision to redirect HS2 funding, bus fares in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland will now remain capped at £2 until December 2024.
This means cheaper journeys for us all.
This recent announcement takes the total Government investment in keeping our bus fares low to nearly £600 million – with over 140 operators signing up to continue offering the cap across more than 5,000 routes.
This forms part of the Conservative Government’s long-term decision making to make life better for us all, and continues to deliver on its five priorities to halve inflation, grow the economy, reduce debt, cut waiting lists and stop the boats.
