A gang of teenagers has been causing mayhem in Melton Town Centre – smashing windows, shoplifting and aggressively intimidating shop staff. On Small Business Saturday [2 December 2023] Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews visited Melton to see how the issue is being tackled.
Rupert met with Cllr Ian Atherton and Cllr Siggy Atherton, who led him on a tour of the worst affected shops and restaurants in the town centre. Rupert also visited the police station and spoke to officers who are dealing with the situation.
Rupert visited McDonalds, Morrisons, MaxiDeal, WH Smiths and Bargain Booze, where he learned of how the gang of teenagers had smashed windows, abused staff and customers, stolen goods and vandalised displays. He also learned how prompt police action had led to an improvement in the situation over the past fortnight.
After his visit, Rupert Matthews praised the police response saying “The police have responded magnificently. They began with increased patrols in the town centre, then the focus moved to criminal investigations and diversion. There have been a number of investigations ranging from public order offences to robbery and burglary. The vast majority of suspects have all now been arrested and the ringleaders charged, then released on strict conditions. I am pleased to see that a joint action group made up of schools, Melton Borough Council, Community Safety Partnership, youth justice, housing and others is now stepping in. Those teenagers only marginally involved are being encouraged to undertake diversionary activities as an alternative to enforcement action. Other measures are also being implemented.”
Cllr Siggy Atherton said “People are worried about the coming holiday period. I am liaising with business owners over what can be done.”
Cllr Ian Atherton added “We need a co-ordinated approach. The council needs to put more into Youth Services. The Conservatives had plans to inject £100,000 but the new Labour-led administration is doing nothing.”
The police-led operation to keep the town centre safe for small businesses, residents and shoppers is on-going.
