I was delighted by the news that the Police handed out nine speeding tickets in a single evening in Hinckley. This is a stunning vindication of the ongoing campaign for road safety launched by Conservative representatives for Hinckley Thomas Lee and Jan Kirby. Now the campaign is looking to the next steps to make roads in Hinckley even safer. And I will be looking to roll out the campaign across a wider area.
The speeding tickets were handed out by officers of the Leicestershire Police on Leicester Road, Normandy Way, Coventry Road and Roston Drive on the evening of February 18th.
Thomas Lee told me : “Over the past few weeks, several residents have contacted me to complain about speeding and other dangerous driving in Hinckley, and particularly on these roads. Along with fellow Conservatives, I have launched a campaign to improve the safety of our roads. I welcome this excellent initiative by the local police. It is a shame that our Liberal Democrat Borough Council does not seem to make road safety a priority.”
“I have taken the issue up with our Conservative-run County Council representatives, who are thankfully taking road safety seriously. That is one reason why I am standing for election to the County Council in May. Making Hinckley safer is a top priority for me.”

A key part of improving road safety will be to mobilise our community to help the police. The Road Safety Partnership is already doing good work, but we need to increase the role of Community Speedwatch and local councils. I want to reinvigorate the ways our police work with and communicate with the public. That is going to involve the police working closely with parish councils, neighbourhood watch committees and others to give local communities the training and equipment that they need to support the police in their work to make our roads safer. Community Mobilisation is the future of local neighbourhood policing.
