New East Midlands MEP Rupert Matthews has enjoyed a behind the scenes look at a major UK manufacturing site in his region on a visit to Tarmac’s Cement and Lime Operation at Tunstead, near Buxton.
Mr Matthews, who was elected in July this year, toured the site which employs over 400 people and has operated for over 100 years. The visit was hosted by the Stone Plant Manager, Jason South and Cement Quality Manager, David Morrison, who gave the MEP a comprehensive tour of the quarry, lime and cement plants which manufacture products for use in construction, farming and many other vital industries in the UK.
The MEP commented: “It was fascinating to look round Tarmac’s Cement and Lime Operation at Tunstead and I was extremely interested to hear about their work. The success of the UK’s economy relies on companies like Tarmac as we continue to invest in major infrastructure and building projects. Tarmac have contributed to a vast number of construction projects including Wembley Stadium, the Shard and Heathrow Terminal 5. I am also encouraged to see Tarmac’s success in the region and I thank Jason, David and the team for taking the time to show me around and talk about the company’s future plans.”
Jason South added: “We were delighted to welcome Mr Matthews to Tunstead and brief him on developments and plans for the site. We hope that understanding a business like Tarmac will help Mr Matthews, and it was very useful to have this discussion with him on site.”
