Conservative MEP for the East Midlands, Rupert Mathews was tested for diabetes today in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The International Diabetes Federation were testing MEPs as part of World Diabetes Day which is being marked around the world today.
World Diabetes Day is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign. It is marked every year on November 14. It is held on the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who was a Canadian scientist whose pioneering work using insulin to treat diabetes earned him the Nobel prize.
After being tested, Rupert commented:
“It is important that we increase our awareness of diabetes. Over 4 million people in the UK live with the condition and unfortunately that number is continuing to increase. It’s important to know what the risk factors are as anyone can get it. I would encourage everyone to look at the Diabetes UK website which provides a range of information on preventing Type 2 diabetes.
“Thankfully my test came back as ‘normal’, but with over 11 million people in the UK who are at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, it is important to know what the warning signs are.”
