Several people have been in touch with me to voice their concerns about protest activity at Highcross shopping centre in Leicester this weekend. I am reassured that Leicestershire Police took appropriate action working with Highcross staff, and I have followed this up with the Chief Officer Team today.
Peaceful protest is important, of course, but I will always ask organisers to notify the police and local council in advance so support and guidance can be given to stay within the law.
All of Leicester benefits from busy shops and happy shoppers at this time of year. There are ways to have protest heard and understood without disrupting Christmas shoppers and people enjoying all our diverse city has to offer.
